Learning

This was my 4th year racing the LTF Minneapolis triathlon.  3 times in the amateur elite wave with winning it last year.  This year I stepped up to the plate and got on the start line with the big boys.  I mean the BIG boys.  Matty Reed is huge... just saying.

Going into the race I expected to learn a lot and expected the race to be on a completely different level.  However, where that level was is what I was going to find.  From the gun I experienced first hand at what a "real" race start was like.  Fast, furious and if your effort is not through the roof your day is over.  -last out of the water-.  There are no pretenders in the water.  Once you are onto the bike everything seems normal until there is no one to catch.  Everyone is GONE. They kill it in the water then are on a completely different level on the bike.  Gave it everything on the bike and only caught 1 person and kept another in sight.  By the run I was more mentally and physically exhausted than I had ever been.  There was no groove, no rhythm and 6 miles to go.

I was really apprehensive about this race and had no real expectations as far as finishing.  To go from winning to last really shows how much the bar has been lifted.  It was an amazing experience to feel where that bar is at and jumpstart my drive to want to get close to the next level.  It is making me take a look at every aspect of the sport. Recovery, nutrition, training, race tactics, mental preparation, etc. I am really excited to see where the rest of the season takes me and hope I can keep learning during my first season as a pro!

Sorry but no pictures from this on unless my mom can figure out her camera.

  1. Agree on pretty much every thing you say. Unfortunately it is impossible to ever really explain this unless to someone unless they themselves make the jump from elite amatuer to pro. Best of luck on your continued progress.
