Collegiate Nationals

I think I have a love-hate relationship with this race. It is one of those that draws you in and you obsess over for months and months, but come out of it a little puzzled by your performance.

The weekend was going well with a good drive down to Lubbock and good warm-ups the day before. The swim was just a bit chilly but the pouring rain and 20mph wind made it a little interesting. After the swim I hopped on my bike and rode for about 10 minutes. In this 10 minutes I started to shiver so bad I could barely hold on to the bars. (Yay for Lubbock)

Race warmups came and went and regardless of the weather we were off. (750m swim, 25mi bike, 6.8mi run)

The swim start was brutal with a lot of fists flying but was quickly over. I think the slowest first wave time was around 7 minutes or something. Got on the bike and passed like 12 guys before the park exit. From here there was not much fighting for positions. Take a look at the goofy hand warmers I came up with the day before.
I was feeling good coming off the bike and by the first run turn I had moved up to third place. From here I started to fade quite a bit and ended up getting passed by some fast guys.

All in all it was a good race and cant be disappointed with a 5th place undergrad finish. There is a chance I'll be back in 2 years to see if I can do any better in Tuscaloosa.
